We aim to make everything we do as open as possible, using licenses like Creative Commons, GPL, etc, so anyone can copy, share, remix, and build their own open source village.
Where possible we use low-cost, locally available materials to ensure a lower barriers of entry in building the village. And because we rely on passive technologies, ongoing living costs are reduced too.
We strive to use environmentally conscious technologies like renewable power and passive heating/cooling to reduce the village’s carbon footprint.
GLOBAL + LOCAL
We have a philosophy of “think global, act local.” We work with projects from all around the world and implement them on a local scale with the help of the people living in the village.
Open, Green, Empowering
The Open Source Village aims to empower citizens, reduce environmental impact, and improve standards of living in an increasingly urbanizing world.
We're building our first village in Anhui Province, China, and work with villagers on the ground and makers around the world to leverage open source, green technologies, and the maker movement to make the world a better place.
We want you to get involved. Right now we've got a Trello board open where you can suggest technologies to use in the village, and later we'll be running global maker challenges and opening the doors to makers, artists, and designers worldwide. Subscribe to our newsletter to hear the latest!

We’re releasing a bunch of articles about open source in ebook format for you to read on your Kindle or other device. They’re just existing articles about open source from around the web (that are freely licensed to share), so quite short and snappy compared to a full-length book. Check our Twitter feed for all the latest news and comments from our team at the Open Source Village. For those in China we’re working on our Wechat feed too!
We’re building a big list of open source technologies that could be used in ecovillages, and we’d like your help to make it bigger and better. Read more about Our Big Open Source Technology List
